Angry Birds Creator Selects Braintree’s Payments Platform

Braintree now powers Rovio’s new Angry Birds Online Shop, reduces cost of PCI compliance

CHICAGO--()--Braintree (https://www.braintreepayments.com), the fastest growing payments platform for online and mobile commerce, announced today that Rovio, creator of the Angry Birds franchise of mobile games and merchandise, has selected Braintree as its payment gateway for its new online and mobile store which sells games, toys, apparel and more.

By switching to Braintree’s payment gateway, the Rovio online and mobile store is now able to accept payments in more than 130 different currencies from around the globe while reducing PCI compliance scope. Braintree’s mobile payment solutions also solve for issues such as one-click checkout, bandwidth efficient transactions and encryption of credit card data on mobile devices. The payment gateway has the proven scalability to handle the global surges in demand generated by new game releases.

“Braintree is proud to provide the payments solution that allows Angry Birds’ legions of fans around the world to further connect with their favorite games in the Angry Birds Online Store,” said Bill Ready, CEO of Braintree. “Braintree’s international payment processing and mobile capabilities as well as our Vault credit card storage solution make us an ideal choice for companies like Rovio that are expanding internationally and facing mounting PCI compliance overhead.”

Braintree is able to dramatically reduce clients’ PCI compliance requirements due to its Transparent Redirect, Client-side Encryption and innovative Vault features, which allow merchants to receive payments and store payment information without ever directly handling sensitive credit card data. This greatly reduces the PCI compliance burden for merchants, saving them valuable time and resources. Braintree’s Vault also allows clients to implement one-click checkout to improve conversion rates.

“We are thrilled that Braintree was able to provide us with a payments solution that meets our needs as a global brand and eliminates so much of our PCI compliance burden,” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. “We needed a payments solution that had scalability, security and flexibility. We also searched for a provider with a strong international track record and a support team that would be able to really cater to our needs.”

Rovio joins Braintree’s extensive client list, which reads like a Who’s Who of influential technology companies, including LivingSocial, 37signals, Uber, OpenTable, Fab.com, GitHub, Airbnb, Heroku, Engine Yard, Animoto, Shopify and HotelTonight. Braintree is processing more than $4 billion in annual credit card volume and is adding more than 100 new merchants a month. Braintree’s explosive growth earned it a spot on the 2011 Inc. 500 list as the nation’s 47th fastest-growing private company and first in the online payments industry. Braintree attracted a $34 million Series A investment from Accel Partners in June 2011 after founder Bryan Johnson profitably bootstrapped the company for four years. Accel is one of the most respected venture firms in the world and has invested in such well-known companies as Facebook, Groupon, and Dropbox.
