MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Telefónica Digital today announces the appointment of Wayne Thorsen as Vice President of Global Partnerships, reporting into Steve Alder, Senior Vice President, Global Partners and Devices. Thorsen most recently held senior business development roles with BlueKai, Inc. and Microsoft. He will be responsible for negotiating global partnerships within the newly formed Digital unit and joins the team effective this week.
Telefónica Digital was formed last year by Telefónica to drive growth opportunities in the new digital world. Global Partnerships is a key strategy for the group, which is allowing the company to establish relationships and build partnerships with a wide range of companies, from software developers to hardware manufacturers. The team works across all Telefónica territories, with a strong presence in Spain and across Latin America, as well as hubs in Germany and the U.K. Wayne will play a key role in the new Silicon Valley office, to ensure Telefónica is strategically situated at the center of technological innovation. For potential partners, Telefónica Digital represents a gateway to over 300 million customers and operations in 25 different countries, in addition to operators in which Telefónica has equity stakes, including China Unicom and Telecom Italia.
“Adding Wayne to the team underscores the importance we see in working with innovative companies in Silicon Valley for Telefónica Digital,” said Steve Alder, Senior Vice President, Global Partners and Devices. “The importance of his role in identifying new potential partnerships and growing our relationships across the US and the globe will be critical in the coming months as we look to collaborate with leading companies in the digital space that are innovating in ways that can benefit our vast global ecosystem of subscribers. We are confident Wayne’s experience in leading partnerships for BlueKai and Microsoft will allow him to continue to increase synergies for Telefónica Digital in the U.S.”
“It is such an exciting time to be working with innovative brands like Telefonica Digital and our partners. Telefónica Digital’s global value chain represents a tremendous opportunity for digital disruptors through collaboration and partnerships,” commented Wayne Thorsen. “In this new role at Telefónica Digital, I look forward to expanding the breadth and depth of global partnerships, for shared success with leading innovators across the world.”
Wayne joins Telefónica with extensive experience in the technology industry, including companies like Microsoft and BlueKai. Most recently he was responsible for leading the Strategic Partnerships team at BlueKai, which was responsible for negotiating partnerships such as with Portals, Search Engines, and large digital web properties, as well as managing the business and on-going operations of those partners. In addition, his team was responsible for strategic business development opportunities such as exchanges, and data provider partnerships and emerging business development opportunities, such as mobile.
He was previously Director of Strategic Partnerships with Microsoft, where he architected, led negotiations for, and managed larger strategic deals for the search and advertising business. Among many other partnerships at Microsoft, Wayne led and managed the original search partnership with Twitter, led the strategic advertising partnerships with Viacom and Digg, and managed the Facebook partnership in its early stages.
