Medical Milestone Achieved with First Successful Pregnancy in North Texas Through Egg Freezing

Fertility Specialists of Texas leading medical advancement for women, families needing to postpone having children

DALLAS--()--Fertility Specialists of Texas today announced the first successful pregnancy in the Dallas/Fort Worth area through the fertility treatment commonly known as “egg freezing.” This medical milestone provides further evidence that egg freezing can greatly benefit women affected by cancer who want to preserve their fertility prior to chemotherapy and women who do not want to create excessive numbers of embryos they may not use. According to Dr. Jerald Goldstein, Medical Director of Fertility Specialists of Texas, women who delay childbearing to pursue professional careers would also benefit from freezing their eggs at a younger age in order to optimize the chance for future healthy pregnancy.

“This is a significant achievement for both Fertility Specialists of Texas and for all of North Texas,” says Dr. Goldstein. “A successful pregnancy further solidifies Dallas as a city on the leading-edge of medical care and advancement.” The family, from Frisco, Texas, is expecting twins as a result of the egg freezing procedure. The due date is November 2012.

Since the human egg is the largest cell in the body and is composed mostly of water, the formation of ice during freezing can disrupt the egg’s internal microscopic contents and its outer membrane. Human sperm and embryos have been successfully frozen for several decades, but human eggs did not survive freezing until recent technology was developed. The freezing technique, known as vitrification, can preserve a woman's eggs indefinitely.

The vitrification procedure used at Fertility Specialists of Texas was developed by Carlos Guerrero, Ph.D., Scientific Director for the practice. Dr. Guerrero’s procedure protocol has consistently achieved high egg survival rates after thawing.

The technology associated with egg freezing is still considered experimental by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and should be performed under the guidance of an Institutional Review Board (IRB). Fertility Specialists of Texas is one of the few practices in North Texas that has received IRB approval for its protocols and procedures for this technology.
