The Open Networking Summit Announces Educational Tutorial Sessions

Two All-Day Sessions Targeted for SDN Engineers and Product Managers

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--()--Open Networking Summits, Inc., the only nonprofit conference group dedicated to accelerating the future of OpenFlow and Software Defined Networking (SDN), has announced its two pre-summit tutorial sessions designed for engineers and product managers who are interested in developing SDN and OpenFlow products and solutions. The day-long tutorial sessions will take place prior to the conference kicks-off on April 16, 2012 at the Santa Clara, Calif. Marriott.

"For one full-day, industry and academic leaders of OpenFlow and SDN will provide a comprehensive overview of architecture, components, and use cases with hands-on exercises to enhance the knowledge of engineers and product managers,” said Guru Parulkar, executive director of the Stanford University Clean Slate Research Program and chairman of the 2012 Summit. “By the end of the tutorial, participants will have a deep understanding of SDN and OpenFlow architectures, as well as what is required to create SDN and OpenFlow components and solutions for different market segments.”

Tutorial One for Engineers will provide an overview of SDN technology, and will drill down into the design of various components that make up the OpenFlow and SDN stack, from OpenFlow-enabled switches to various applications running on controller and virtualization platforms. Tutorial instructors who have first-hand experience developing, testing, and deploying OpenFlow and SDN components will include:

  • Brandon Heller, PhD student, Stanford University
  • David Erickson, PhD student, Stanford University
  • Hide Shimonishi, principal researcher, NEC Research
  • Murphy McCauley, staff researcher, ICSI, UC Berkeley
  • Rob Sherwood, member of technical staff, Big Switch Networks
  • Srini Seetharaman, senior research scientist, Deutsche Telekom R&D Labs

Tutorial Two for Product Managers will be presented in co-operation with the Open Networking Foundation (ONF) Market Education Committee. The presentations will address how OpenFlow provides unprecedented flexibility and scalability to any type of environment, from traditional and hyperscale data centers, to carrier WAN and enterprise campuses. In addition, industry best practices will be discussed, including the benefits gained with the introduction of SDN from both vendor and end-user perspectives. Tutorial instructors will include:

  • Amit Agarwal, product manager, Google
  • Dan Pitt, executive director, ONF
  • Harry Petty, vice president, marketing and business development, Vello Systems, Inc.
  • Isabelle Guis, vice president of outbound marketing, Big Switch Networks
  • Matt Davy, chief network architect, Indiana University
  • Matt Palmer, partner, WireTap Ventures
  • Peter Krey, president and founder, Krey, Associates, Inc.
  • Rakesh Saha, director of product management, IBM Systems and Technology Group
  • Rich Groves, principal network architect, Microsoft Global Network Services
  • Steve Brar, global product marketing manager, HP Networking

Following the pre-summit tutorials, the two-day Open Networking Summit will take place on April 17-18, 2012 at the Santa Clara, Calif. Marriott. The event will feature three keynote presentations from Urs Hölzle, senior vice president, technical infrastructure and Google Fellow at Google, and chairman of the board of the Open Networking Foundation (ONF); Kaoru Yano, chairman of the board (representative director) and former CEO, NEC Corporation; and Yukio Ito, senior vice president, service infrastructure, NTT Communications. During the Summit there will be multiple insightful presentations from industry luminaries, and an exhibition hall will be filled with 20 vendors and academic institution showcasing OpenFlow and SDN products and services.
