This report details the manufacture of both open and enclosed service bodies in the United States and Canada, with estimates of unit and dollar production for thirty-three manufacturers of these bodies.

Twenty-six manufacturers produce open service truck bodies; the top ten of these account for nearly 70% of production. Close to half of all manufacturers of open service bodies also offer enclosed service van bodies, or alternatively, provide customers with the option of adding a topper or canopy to the open truck body to work as an enclosure.

The top ten manufacturers of closed service truck bodies account for more than 85% of total production. The growing trend toward the use of enclosed service van bodies has prompted many van body manufacturers to enter this product segment. Some enclosed van body manufacturers do not make open service truck bodies, concentrating only on enclosed bodies.

Proximity to the customer is important, as transportation costs impact prices. Therefore, the service truck body manufacturing industry has a large number of small, regionally focused manufacturers.

While sales of service truck and van bodies decreased significantly in the period 2006 to 2009, demand came back strongly in 2010, powered by replacement demand, as a large share of such vehicles had outlived their useful lives.
