Colloquium Accredits IU Health as First Heart Failure System in US

COLUMBUS, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Healthcare Accreditation Colloquium announced today that Indiana University Health has been recognized as the first Colloquium Accredited Heart Failure System in the US.

“This designation reflects that every patient receives the most preeminent care, whenever and wherever served”

According to Dr. Tony Joseph, CEO of the Colloquium, “This accomplishment reflects how effectively IU Health has systematically integrated the domains of Community, Hospital, Clinician, and Science into its care of heart failure. For those with the disease and their families, this signals a commitment to ‘relationship-based care’ that focuses on meeting the needs of the human person, not an anonymous patient.”

The Colloquium’s rigorous accreditation process is modeled after process improvement methods and includes a study of current practices, a gap analysis, in-depth interviews, clinical process mapping, an onsite review, and a comprehensive milestone report with specific action steps. Benefits include:

  • IU Health, state wide integration from early diagnosis to advanced care including VAD and heart transplant
  • Streamlined processes across the entire continuum of care
  • Enabling individuals to participate in their own care with more independence less frequent hospitalization
  • Collaboration with other Colloquium member hospitals across the country

“This designation reflects that every patient receives the most preeminent care, whenever and wherever served,” said Dr. Irmina Gradus-Pizlo, director of IU Health’s Advanced Heart Care Program. “Every IU Health facility makes a valued and significant contribution toward achieving the goal of preeminent care, and when we come together we can provide the best care to patients in all of the communities we serve.”

The accreditation process of the Healthcare Accreditation Colloquium recognizes organizations with a firm and ongoing commitment to improving heart failure care. Colloquium accreditation gives the public insight into the complex world of healthcare that may help those seeking heart failure care. Over 800,000 Americans are diagnosed with heart failure each year. Virtually all individuals with heart failure require hospitalization as the disease progresses. Heart Failure is the number one reason for hospital admission for persons over 65 years of age. Colloquium member hospitals have put into place an organized and systematic approach to caring for those individuals within the community and during hospital admission.
