EnOcean Introduces New Ways to Harness Energy from the Press of a Button

New ECO 200 Energy Converter and PTM 330 Wireless Module Open Up a Wealth of New Applications for Energy-harvesting Wireless Technology

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--EnOcean, Inc., a pioneer in self-powered wireless sensor technology for the building automation market, announced today that the company is launching its third generation of mechanical energy converters with the ECO 200. When combined with the wireless PTM 330 transmitter module, the ECO 200 provides the foundation for a host of battery-less wireless applications. This new pairing enables speedy and simple implementation of energy harvesting switching solutions. EnOcean again is leading the way for new possibilities in building automation, in industry and in household appliance engineering. [Product Image: Download JPG.]

Completely energy-autonomous system

From the motion of a simple press of a button, mechanical energy converters can produce the energy needed to transmit wireless signals between devices. A magnetic flux is reversed by a coil as soon as a spring mechanism reaches a snap-over point. The ECO 200 energy converter is the latest advancement of these mechanical energy generators. The energy harvester comes with more efficient energy conversion, less noise emission and higher load capability than its revolutionary predecessors. The battery-less PTM 330 wireless module can be connected to the energy converter by spring contacts, with no soldering. This PTM 330 module features four digital inputs to map up to four switching states. Additionally, an interface allows configuration of the content of the wireless telegrams during manufacturing of an end-user device. Like every EnOcean wireless module, the PTM 330 has a unique 32-bit identification number to eliminate any overlap with other wireless sensors. Wireless range is up to 100 feet inside buildings and 1000 feet in open space.

This complete ready-to-go system means that OEMs, with just mechanical expertise, can speedily and simply implement their switching solutions enabled by energy harvesting wireless technology. Furthermore, being interoperable the EnOcean wireless standard allows straightforward combination of products with industrial controls and receivers from a wide range of different manufacturers.

Diversity of use

Application possibilities for the energy harvesting wireless ECO 200 and PTM 300 modules range from handheld transmitters, window and door sensing, access data control and position switching for a variety of industrial switches. For example, handheld transmitters powered by the solution can be used to control gates and garages, or to call a nurse from a hospital bed. Another application that has already been implemented is wireless testing of cable harness in automobile production. The press of a button generates enough energy to determine if the individual components are properly attached to the cable harness. Furthermore, the technology can be used to develop batteryless vermin traps or batteryless stop buttons in city buses. Enabled by energy harvesting wireless technology, all devices are absolutely maintenance-free and function without cabling.
