BMI forecasts the number of arrivals to the US will reach more than 58.0mn in 2011, increasing to nearly 60.3mn in 2012 and 68.3mn by 2015. In 2009, the US had 54.9mn arrivals, 23.8mn of which were from overseas. The number of arrivals increased to 55.9mn in 2010. The majority of arrivals to the US come to the country for leisure purposes, with 11.9mn forecast to arrive for this purpose in 2011. In 2012, a slight increase in leisure arrivals is forecast to 12.5mn, which is then expected to rise to 14.6mn by 2015.
In 2012, nearly 9.9mn people are expected to embark from the US onboard a cruise ship, in comparison to 14.3mn globally. The cruise industry is growing and BMI forecasts that 11.6mn people will take a cruise from the US in 2015, while 16.9mn will to do so worldwide. Passenger and cruise line expenditure is also rising, with US$20.7bn forecast to be spent in 2012, increasing to US$27.4bn by 2015.
Outbound departures by US residents have been climbing since 2001, when 67.0mn people left the country. In 2012, it is forecast that 74.5mn will depart, rising to 79.7mn by the end of the forecast period. The top three destination regions for US tourists are Latin America, North America and Europe, with 37.6mn, 14.8mn and 12.9mn people forecast to visit those regions respectively in 2012. The three leading country destinations are Mexico, Canada and the UK. In 2012, 26.6mn American tourists are forecast to visit Mexico, while 14.8mn and 3.3mn are expected to visit Canada and the UK respectively.
