PLANO, Texas--()--A substantial donation from Cirro Energy, a subsidiary of Dominion Resources, will help feed more than 2,600 children across the greater Houston area. With Cirro Energy’s $4,000 contribution, Kids’ Meals can continue its mission of providing food for preschool-aged children living in poverty.
“We’re grateful that Cirro Energy is joining us for a second year in the fight against child poverty.”
“The need for Kids’ Meals is staggering and continues to grow,” said Mike Rose, managing director of Cirro Energy. “With hundreds of children on the Kids’ Meals waiting list, we want to help make the holidays brighter for children in Houston.”
Kids' Meals delivers nutritious lunches every weekday of the year directly to the homes of 1,400 underprivileged, preschool-aged children. The meals are distributed from two locations, free of cost to qualifying families. The waiting list for impoverished children is growing rapidly due to an increase in food prices, the rising unemployment rate and slowing economy.
About 26 percent of children under 5 years old in Houston live in poverty. With a steadily growing need, Kids’ Meals plans to increase the number of lunches they deliver by 20 percent in 2012.
“In 2010, Kids' Meals delivered more than 340,000 lunches with a staff of eight and the help of more than 9,000 volunteers,” said Ruth Burrell, executive director of Kids’ Meals. “We’re grateful that Cirro Energy is joining us for a second year in the fight against child poverty.”
