DALLAS--()--Nearly 60 survivors of domestic violence in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. received unforgettable holiday surprises when Mary Kay showered the women with makeovers, gifts cards, beauty products, musical serenades, flowers, and empowerment. The Mary Kay “You Are Beautiful” holiday celebrations served residents of domestic violence shelters Rainbow Services in Los Angeles, and My Sister’s Place and “Ayuda” in Washington, D.C.
“Domestic violence poses a serious threat to that mission, and that is why we take a stand against abuse. We hope the ‘You Are Beautiful’ events provide building blocks of self-confidence to help survivors emerge from their trying journey stronger and more beautiful than ever.”
As the busy holiday shopping season peaks and food and toy drives bring in their last donations, many survivors of domestic violence are devoting their full, but limited, resources to making their children’s holiday memorable, living constantly selfless lives. The “You Are Beautiful” holiday celebrations put these women at the center of attention for a day and focuses solely on their wants and needs to be beautiful inside and out. In Los Angeles, Dec. 8, women of Rainbow Services were surprised with a visit by Hollywood celebrity, Alexa Vega (Spy Kids franchise and From Prada to Nada), who shared personal stories of the six strong women in her family.
“If one in four women are victims of domestic abuse in the U.S., that means that one of my four sisters may become a victim,” Vega said. Vega participated this summer in the Mary Kay Inspiring Stories documentary series narrating one of three films about overcoming domestic violence, and finding joy.
“For nearly 50 years, Mary Kay’s mission has been to enrich women’s lives. Today we accomplished that mission with 60 single mothers who in turn will inspire other women,” said Sheryl Adkins-Green, Chief Marketing Officer. “Domestic violence poses a serious threat to that mission, and that is why we take a stand against abuse. We hope the ‘You Are Beautiful’ events provide building blocks of self-confidence to help survivors emerge from their trying journey stronger and more beautiful than ever.”
The events were hosted by Mary Kay Independent National Sales Directors, Lupita Ceballos in Los Angeles and Ada Garcia in Washington. These women who are leaders in Mary Kay independent sales force in the United States, provided inspiration, motivation, and holiday cheer to survivors.
Each shelter received surprise grant donations from The Mary Kay Foundation(SM). A total of $40,000 were awarded to participating shelters for programs providing counseling, shelter and protection for families of domestic violence.
