NASHVILLE, Tenn.--()--TN.gov, the nationally recognized official website for the state of Tennessee, recently hit a big milestone – 100 million transactions. TN.gov provides quick and easy access to a breadth of information and allows citizens and businesses to transact with the state 24/7. The online services available through TN.gov provide efficient government interaction that saves time and money for citizens, businesses, and state government. TN.gov offers a wide range of online services including driver license renewal, professional license renewals, felony offender lookup, background checks, and more.
The Department of Safety and Homeland Security‘s Driver License Renewal service was the first transactional online service available through TN.gov. Launched in 2000, more than 32,000 licenses were renewed online in its first year. In 2010, the service averaged over 20,000 renewals a month and helped over 230,000 individuals avoid standing in line at a driver license station. The move to self-service transactions is not only convenient, but also reduces over the counter work and saves the state hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. The Department of Safety and Homeland Security‘s suite of driver license related services are some of the more popular services available through TN.gov and played a big role in helping Tennessee reach 100 million online transactions.
Also contributing to Tennessee’s 100 million transaction milestone is the Department of Revenue. The Department of Revenue has a wide range of online services that allow almost any tax filing to be completed online. Over 50 percent of all Tennessee tax filings are now completed online and the agency expects to hit a new milestone of their own over the next fiscal year – 1 million filings in a one-year period.
Online filings have nearly quadrupled in the past five years, allowing the Department of Revenue to process hundreds of thousands more filings with fewer staff in less time. The Department of Revenue collected $4.2 billion through TN.gov in the latest fiscal year, marking the first time $4 billion was surpassed in a 12-month period, and has collected $22 billion through the portal over the past 10 years.
So how does TN.gov plan to make it to the next big milestone? By utilizing mobile, social and Web 2.0 offerings to bring more people to the portal and to make more applications more available. TN.gov is an emerging leader in the use of social media and recently unveiled a new portal design including several new features and functionality that help citizens connect with government services, government leaders and others who are interested in government. The TN.gov home page sports a permanent Twitter feed that continuously displays state government tweets in real time. Citizens can begin to interact with Tennessee government just seconds after loading the main page as they are offered a range of topics, including agriculture, tourism, health alerts, statewide traffic, and hunting/fishing. TN.gov is also focusing on delivering information and applications that are not only available 24/7 but from anywhere on any device. Mobile computing is rapidly becoming part of everyday life and TN.gov is adapting to meet expectations by offering content specifically designed for high usability in a small screen setting.
The convenience and ease of use of TN.gov services have helped the portal reach 100 million transactions over the past decade; future innovations and rapid growth will push the portal to a billion transactions over the next decade.
