DigitalOptics Corporation Technology in Space Shuttle Endeavour Mission

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--DigitalOptics Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tessera Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:TSRA), today announced that it provided Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corporation (BATC) with critical micro-optic components for the company’s laser-based Vision Navigation System (VNS). The VNS was used in the Sensor Test for Orion Relative-navigation Risk Reduction Mission (STORRM), a space station docking demonstration executed during the final mission of space shuttle Endeavour, which launched on May 16, 2011.

“The diffractive beam shaper from DigitalOptics Corporation enabled Ball Aerospace to meet our top priority maximum range requirement, and performed very well for STORRM on Endeavour’s final mission”

The Ball Aerospace VNS, which incorporates laser radar with a high-definition docking camera, will help approaching space vehicles find and align to the International Space Station, making it safer and easier for vehicles to dock. The VNS includes a beam shaping diffractive optical element (DOE), which DigitalOptics Corporation designed and produced for the project. The DOE improves the range of positive acquisition by maximizing the uniformity of the projected laser beam and minimizing wasted beam power.

“The diffractive beam shaper from DigitalOptics Corporation enabled Ball Aerospace to meet our top priority maximum range requirement, and performed very well for STORRM on Endeavour’s final mission,” said Jim Baer, VNS lead optical engineer for Ball Aerospace. “We appreciate DigitalOptics Corporation’s design capabilities and on-time delivery.”

“It is truly exciting to have our innovative micro-optics contribute to the Endeavour’s historic STS-134 mission,” said Bob Roohparvar, president, DigitalOptics Corporation. “Our design and manufacture of cutting-edge optics – for demanding applications or mass production – provide solutions for forward-looking designs.”
