North American Next Generation Wireless Networks Market Gaining Pace: companiesandmarkets.com

  • By 2015, 4G technology adoption level will exceed the 2010 US population figure
  • Competition for bandwidth escalating amongst US tier-one carriers
  • 3G/4G 2015 forecast: in excess of 300,000,000 points of presence (POPs)

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The North American next generation wireless networks market is gaining pace, according to a new report available on companiesandmarkets.com. Many US networks are informally marketing their LTE and WiMax technologies/capabilities as 4G, although the term is used incorrectly, as they do not meet the data rate requirement criteria determined for 4G classification.

The North American mobile network market is highly competitive, and operators are becoming increasingly apprehensive over their available bandwidth and subsequent ability to provide comprehensive levels of network coverage.

As yet, no next-generation wireless network technologies meet with 4G capability criteria, although many US tier-one networks have been referring to their technologies in this way. Once officially launched, 4G is expected to reveal opportunities for applications which have previously been restricted to fixed line networks due to the amount of data required, e.g., advanced multimedia services, telephony and gaming, amongst others.

Although the networks are heavily pushing 4G and its assumed higher speed data delivery, it is understood that the similarities in bandwidth deployed for both 3G and 4G technologies mean that handset users are unlikely to experience significant speed improvements. The research report, entitled North American Next Generation Wireless Networks Market, indicates that the majority of mobile devices will stay 3G, benefiting from solid coverage levels.

Mobile device manufacturers are integrating HD displays and systems-on-a-chip (SOC), to enhance usability and drive demand for smartphones, and subsequently adding to network traffic. Feature phones are losing market share to smartphones in the US, therefore tier-one operators are keen to ensure that they own enough bandwidth to support the advanced functionality of high-end mobile devices.

The May 2011 publication contains 47 pages of insight into the North American next generation wireless networks market, including historical and forecast data for the period 2010-2015. The report analyses 2G, 3G and 4G technologies by the following mobile operators: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. Full profiles are included for each organisation.
