Wireless Innovation Forum Announces Availability of a New Software Defined Radio Market Adoption Study for Members

Six Previous SDR Market Studies Now Available Publicly

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Wireless Innovation Forum (www.WirelessInnovation.org), a non-profit international industry association dedicated to driving the future of radio communications and systems worldwide, today announced a new Software Defined Radio (SDR) market study, available to members only, and the public release of six previous SDR market studies and two reports.

“As SDR technology evolves and matures, the Wireless Innovation Forum has identified both strong use cases for SDR technology across multiple markets, as well as a continuing need for SDR market studies to validate the technology and product strategies of the ecosystem and the investment community”

The new members-only market study, “SDR Market Size Study Report,” replaces the previous market studies from 2007, which are now publicly available. Prepared by Mobile Experts and commissioned by the Forum’s User Requirements Committee, chaired by Manuel Uhm of MIPS Technologies, the new report highlights total global shipments of SDRs, as well as more comprehensive breakdowns of the adoption of SDR for mobile devices, mobile infrastructure, military communications, public safety or land mobile communications, and more.

“There is considerable confusion about the maturity of Software Defined Radios in the industry,” said Joe Madden, Principal Analyst at Mobile Experts. “In fact, more than one billion SDRs will be shipped next year, in complex radio systems ranging from mobile phones to land mobile radios and military tactical radios. In addition, the scope of flexibility demanded by end users is increasing. Today’s radios are expected to work over a range of different modulation formats and even varying bandwidth.”

The new market study includes descriptions and forecasted shipments in several markets:

  • Mobile Infrastructure
  • Mobile Handsets and Terminals
  • Military Tactical Communications
  • Land Mobile Radio
  • Satellite Communications

The Wireless Innovation Forum™ (www.WirelessInnovation.org) is comprised of a number of work and special interest groups that collaborate to further the advancement of advanced radio technologies. The User Requirements Committee is just one of four Forum committees, and includes Work and Special Interest Groups focused on topics from education to TD-LTE in White Space.

“As SDR technology evolves and matures, the Wireless Innovation Forum has identified both strong use cases for SDR technology across multiple markets, as well as a continuing need for SDR market studies to validate the technology and product strategies of the ecosystem and the investment community,” said Mr. Uhm. “We are pleased to be able to provide this critical service to our members who comprise much of this ecosystem. It is also exciting to see SDR technology start to proliferate to new emerging markets such as intelligent transportation systems, medical, and machine-to-machine communications, which will continue to foster the need for new SDR technology and market studies to support those endeavors.”

Previous market studies that are now open to the public include:

SDR Market Study Task 6: The Telematics Market
SDR Market Study Task 5: The Cognitive Radio Market
SDR Market Study Task 4: The U.S. Public Safety Market
SDR Market Study Task 3: Wi-Fi, WiMAX, and Beyond 3G/4G
SDR Market Study Task 2: The Cellular Industry - Terminals and Infrastructure
SDR Market Study Task 1: Market Segmentation and Sizing
SDR Operator Market Requirements
The Emergence of the Software Phone

These reports were previously made available to members only as a member benefit. The Forum has many documents and files available to members as well as the public that can be found in our Document Library.
