Axion International Presented with the American Chemistry Council’s Inaugural "Innovation in Plastics Recycling Award"

Axion One of Three Winners of Prestigious Industry Award

NEW PROVIDENCE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Axion International (OTCBB:AXIH) a leading producer of industrial building products and railroad ties made from 100% recycled plastic, is pleased to announce that it was selected as an inaugural recipient of the “Innovation in Plastics Recycling Award” by the American Chemistry Council (ACC) due to Axion’s innovative Recycled Structural Composite (RSC) technology, which has been used in various structural building materials, including railroad ties, marine pilings and I-beams. Its products were notably used to construct several recycled plastic bridges for the US Army at Fort Bragg, NC that were designed to allow for the crossing of an M1 Abrams Tank weighing-in at approximately 70+ tons.

“We are pleased to be named a winner of the Innovation in Plastics Recycling Award”

The inaugural "Innovation in Plastics Recycling Award" was introduced by the ACC to raise awareness of the importance of recycling and to recognize innovation in the plastics recycling industry. This year’s three winners were honored during a press event in Washington, DC, on July 27th and were also given the opportunity to attend the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries’ 2011 Recycling Works Gala.

“We are pleased to be named a winner of the Innovation in Plastics Recycling Award,” stated Axion Chief Technology Officer, Jim Kerstein. “As an inaugural winner, we consider it an honor to represent the recycling industry as the ACC seeks to increase awareness and to promote recycled plastic technology throughout the United States and around the world. We believe that Axion’s proven and innovative building materials are attracting new and exciting uses for recycled plastics as engineers, architects and policy makers increasingly look for innovative building solutions that are not only environmentally friendly, but in many cases, more economically viable than traditional building materials.”

ACC is America’s oldest trade association, representing companies engaged in the business of chemistry since its founding in 1872. To enable these ongoing innovations, ACC supports public policies that will drive creation of groundbreaking products that improve lives and the environment, enhance the economic vitality of communities and protect public health.

Axion’s RSC is inert and contains no toxic materials. It is impervious to insect infestation, will not leach toxic chemicals nor warp. Because it is lighter than traditional materials, transporting RSC is less expensive and reduces energy costs. In addition, RSC is completely recyclable at the end of its functional life.
