NFB-NEWSLINE® Announces the Addition of Target Weekly Ads to its Service

BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The National Federation of the Blind today announced that NFB-NEWSLINE®, its free service that offers independent access by print-disabled people to hundreds of local and national publications and TV listings, has partnered with Target to provide subscribers with easy and independent access to weekly ads from Target stores across the United States. NFB-NEWSLINE® subscribers can now learn of new or special sale items available at their local Target, aiding them in their purchasing decisions.

“We are most pleased that we can continually increase the benefit of our service to our subscribers”

Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said: “The addition of Target advertisements to NFB-NEWSLINE® gives subscribers access to more newspaper content than ever before. Most newspapers include circulars, but until now, blind people have not had independent access to that information. NFB-NEWSLINE® subscribers can now find what products available in their local Target are on sale, enabling them to easily determine what to purchase.”

Sheila Turner, a frequent Target customer living in Washington State, said: “I’ve been an NFB-NEWSLINE® subscriber for many, many years, and love having access to the news that’s important to me. Having advertisements for my local Target store is very exciting, because I do all the shopping for my family and usually go to the SuperTarget in my area as I can get most everything I need right there. This addition to NFB-NEWSLINE® service content really helps me in that it allows me to know what items are on sale so I can stock up—which is good news for a large family like mine!”

Chuck Herrig, vice president of marketing for Target, said: “Target is proud to partner with the National Federation of the Blind to offer this service, making our weekly ads more accessible to the print disabled. This partnership will enable Target to share our exceptional values and shopping experience with even more guests across the country.”

“We are most pleased that we can continually increase the benefit of our service to our subscribers,” said Scott White, director of the NFB-NEWSLINE® program for the National Federation of the Blind. “These advertisements will allow our subscribers to learn of sale items in such categories as electronics, health and beauty, and toys, thus assisting our subscribers in their purchasing decisions. NFB-NEWSLINE® is actively working to set the gold standard for audio information services, and the addition of circulars from Target stores has enabled us to further our goals of superior access and service.”

NFB-NEWSLINE® allows those who cannot read conventional newsprint due to a visual or physical disability to access publications as well as television and job listings over the telephone, on the Web, or by download to a digital talking book player or MP3-playing device.

Those interested in subscribing to the service may fill out the online application form, write to nfbnewsline@nfb.org, or call (866) 504-7300. In order to be eligible for NFB-NEWSLINE®, an individual must be a U.S. resident who is legally blind or has a physical or learning disability that prevents the independent reading of newspapers.
