PHILADELPHIA--()--The generation gap existing between today’s seniors and teens is set to be bridged through The Best Day of My Life (So Far), a new community storytelling program in Philadelphia. In partnership with the Free Library of Philadelphia and The Best Day of My Life (So Far), AARP will offer free intergenerational workshops for local teens and seniors to share commonalities and life experiences.
“AARP hopes to reach its members in Philadelphia to extend an invitation to take part in this innovative program that encourages mentorship and intergenerational outreach”
The program consists of having seniors and teenagers share their interests, life situations, current events and other happenings each week during an 8 week period. Admission is free and class sessions are scheduled to begin on July 13 until August 31 held at the Free Library of Philadelphia Parkway Central Branch. “We are excited to reach out to AARP members in the city who want to share their summer in hopes of enriching the life of a teenager,” says Benita Cooper Founder and Executive Director. “We have organized this program in the past and it has been well received by teens, seniors and family members.”
The Best Day of My Life (So Far) class sessions have nurtured over 100 participants and is accompanied by the popular blog site www.thebestdayofmylifesofar.com. “AARP hopes to reach its members in Philadelphia to extend an invitation to take part in this innovative program that encourages mentorship and intergenerational outreach,” says Grace Rustia, AARP Community Outreach Director.
AARP has long been an advocate for reaching across the generations to connect through its grandparents raising grandchildren initiatives or its child mentoring efforts in Philadelphia, working with organizations such as Experience Corps and the Temple University Center for Intergenerational Learning.
