NEWTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--After receiving a barrage of hate mail, people at healthcare consulting firm, Hayes Management Consulting, realized that they were being incorrectly targeted for an incident regarding a staff person being fired because his wife has cancer. The staff person worked at Haynes Management, a real estate company, located in a nearby town. The only difference in their names is the “N.” The story went viral, even appearing on ABC. It was met with a firestorm of outrage from readers. Some of that outrage is being directed at the healthcare firm, Hayes Management Consulting (no “n”).
“I want to tell people – it’s not us! We have nothing to do with this,” said Pete Butler, Hayes’ president. “Our mission is to improve healthcare operations for patients. It is ironic, but also concerning if people associate our name with this incident.”
The marketing department at Hayes has been replying to emails, attempting to clarify the situation. “At first we thought it was strange spam,” said Wendy Loveland, marketing manager at Hayes. “It’s horrible to see people writing about us like this, especially when we work so hard to help healthcare organizations, help patients, and give to healthcare charities. We don’t sell real estate. We didn’t fire anyone. These people have looked at the wrong website!”
The incident demonstrates the power of social media, for better or worse.
