GREENVILLE, S.C.--()--Hubbell Lighting (www.hubbelllighting.com) a market leader in innovative lighting technology for more than 120 years has recently provided an extensive lighting installation serving the needs of BAE Systems, Inc.
“Through the design phase of BAE’s new office space, we were tasked with providing a LEED certified facility”
A leading global defense and security company with approximately 46,000 employees worldwide, BAE Systems recently opened a new office facility in the Redland Corporate Center in Rockville, MD.
Designed by DBI Architects, Inc., the largest locally owned architecture and interior design firm in the Washington DC metropolitan area, the six-story 139,120 sq. ft. BAE office reflects the company’s commitment to reducing its impact on the environment and, in the process, improving its operational efficiency.
According to Elizabeth Blunck, a DBI Director, the overall building plan embraced sustainability as a very important element. “Through the design phase of BAE’s new office space, we were tasked with providing a LEED certified facility,” she said.
To contribute to BAE’s LEED and sustainability objectives, DBI worked closely with One Source Associates, the Hubbell lighting agent serving the Baltimore, Washington, and Virginia markets. Together, they specified three of Hubbell Lighting’s indoor lighting brands – Columbia Lighting, Prescolite, and Dual-Lite.
Columbia Lighting’s fluorescent fixtures specified included narrow parabolics in the open office areas throughout all floors. Designed to integrate into a floating ceiling system, the fixtures, the linear air supply and return diffusers appear as strips in the ceiling tile and grid system. In addition to the narrow parabolics, 2’x 4’ low glare recessed parabolics are used in pantries, workrooms, copy rooms, and storage and file rooms. Low glare 4’x 4’ recessed parabolics with dimmers were placed in conference rooms and the same fixtures were installed with motion sensors in all enclosed offices. Lastly, 8’ industrial strips are found in switch rooms located on each floor. All the fixtures employ energy efficient T5 lamps.
Adding to the total interior illumination plan, Prescolite 6” horizontal triple compact fluorescent (CFL) lamped downlighting fixtures bring a sparkle of light to all the main corridors and cross baffle downlights light the corridors where there was no plenum space. In the conference rooms, 6” downlights with dimming ballasts work in tandem with Columbia recessed parabolics. Energy efficient Dual-Lite LED Edge-lit exit signage throughout the building directs occupants to the path of egress.
Working hand-in-hand with vendors, sub-contractors, and engineers, the end result of the DBI effort to turn over a building with LEED certification potential exceeded everyone’s expectations when the building achieved LEED Silver status, Blunck noted.
