NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NTT America, a wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) and a Tier-1 global IP network services provider, today participated in World IPv6 Day, an event sponsored and organized by the Internet Society (ISOC) to demonstrate readiness for the transition to IPv6. NTT America has been providing IPv6 service to its customers since 2004 via the NTT Communications Global IP Network, which was the first network to offer commercially available dual-stack IPv6 transit with global availability.
During World IPv6 Day, a 24-hour period that began on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET (0:00 UTC), Internet service providers, hardware makers, operating system vendors and Web companies enabled IPv6 on their main websites to test connections, remedy issues and ensure for a smooth future transition from IPv4 to IPv6. World IPv6 Day was designed by the ISOC as an opportunity for the industry to test its IPv6 capabilities in a controlled environment, identifying any issues or bottlenecks before turning IPv6 on permanently.
“NTT America’s participation in World IPv6 Day is yet another step we are taking to proactively encourage our customers to make the transition to IPv6 and support them through the process,” said Michael Wheeler, vice president of NTT America’s Global IP Network business unit. “No provider has a longer history in providing commercial IPv6 than NTT Communications.”
NTT Communications boasts a strong history of IPv6 expertise, dating back to 1996 when it started one of the world’s largest global IPv6 research networks. Following the launch of IPv6 native, tunneling and dual stack commercial service in North America in 2003, the company launched its IPv6 native and dual stack services globally in 2004. Today, approximately 30 percent of NTT America customer ports and 70 percent of peering ports are IPv6 enabled. Additionally, 20 percent of NTT America customers currently purchase IPv6 transit.

NTT America also recently helped Internet Systems Consortium, Inc. (ISC) significantly improve its IPv6 infrastructure by donating a GigE port to the organization, a non-profit public benefit corporation dedicated to supporting the infrastructure of the Internet by developing and maintaining core production quality software, protocols and operations. NTT America previously donated a GigE link to ISC in July 2008, which was used to support its various open source software for the Internet community as well as other public-benefit software projects.
