Cape Light Compact Enrolls 220 Volunteers for Phase II of Smart Home Energy Monitoring Pilot, Seeks 280 More Participants

BARNSTABLE, Mass.--()--Cape Light Compact is seeking the final 280 of its slated 500 total volunteer homeowners from the Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard service area to participate in Phase II of its Smart Home Energy Monitoring Pilot.

“Given the success of the program so far, it was a no-brainer to extend it further”

Phase II, which has already enrolled 220 volunteers, is an extension of Cape Light Compact’s extremely successful first phase, which launched in the summer of 2009. By providing near real-time monitoring of a home’s energy usage for participants to monitor and make meaningful behavioral changes, first phase participants saved an average of nine percent off their monthly bills. Furthermore, 75 percent of program participants reduced energy consumption during the program, and one-third reduced their average energy consumption by four or more kilowatt hours (kWh) per day.

“Given the success of the program so far, it was a no-brainer to extend it further,” said Kevin Galligan, energy efficiency program manager at Cape Light Compact. “By providing near real-time energy monitoring, and advice on how to improve energy use, homeowners can have a huge impact on reducing their energy bills. We’re thrilled to continue the program and extend the benefits to more of our customers.”

Phase II will extend the program to a wider cross-section of Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard residents. The technology, supplied by energy platform company Tendril, includes whole-house wireless monitoring, an in-home display, and a wireless base station designed to upload near real-time data to a web monitoring program. The technology provides homeowners with detailed information on how much energy they are using, when it is being used, how much it costs, and actions that could reduce energy consumption and promote savings.

Residents who would like to participate in Cape Light Compact’s Home Energy Pilot Project can sign up for consideration by going to the SHEMP Phase II page on the Cape Light Compact website at www.capelightcompact.org, or by completing an online application at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CLCSHEMPPHASEII.
