BioFlorida Institute Elects Founding Board of Directors and Announces Initial Programs

Top priorities are improving science education, supporting scientists

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The BioFlorida Institute, a not-for-profit foundation focused on education, professional development and bioscience industry resources, has announced its founding Board of Directors, which includes some of the state’s leading figures in science, education, finance and law.

“Attracting more top-level researchers and research organizations to the state and improving math and science education programs at all levels allows our students not only to benefit from the best minds in scientific research, but also offers them the potential for high-paying jobs in the sciences when they graduate.”

“Our founding board members have an astonishing depth of experience and expertise, and are highly committed professionals dedicated to education improvements and the growth of biosciences in Florida,” said interim Institute chair and vice president of scientific operations for Scripps Florida, Dr. Harry Orf. “With our directors, we have the tools we need to enhance the educational and business climates for this high ‘return-on-investment’ industry; one that has enormous potential for advancing our state through job creation, business attraction and talent retention.”

Frank Brogan, chancellor of the State University System of Florida, and former Governor Jeb Bush will also assist the Institute in an advisory capacity, particularly in regard to the education-related aspects of its work.

“The BioFlorida Institute’s mission represents a great synergy with our state’s higher education system,” Brogan said. “Attracting more top-level researchers and research organizations to the state and improving math and science education programs at all levels allows our students not only to benefit from the best minds in scientific research, but also offers them the potential for high-paying jobs in the sciences when they graduate.”

Governor Bush, whose administrations took a lead role in developing the state’s bioscience industry, also expressed his support. “Education reform, both within our state and throughout the country, is of critical importance. The BioFlorida Institute’s mission to improve our state’s science and math education programs aligns with the priorities of my organizations, the Foundation for Florida’s Future and Foundation for Excellence in Education, and I am pleased to support their efforts,” Bush said.

The Institute was launched by BioFlorida, the statewide bioscience industry trade association that represents more than 200 member companies and research organizations in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device fields. The Institute’s top priorities include fostering better math and science education programs in Florida; providing industry-specific workforce training to help create high-paying bioscience jobs within the state; supporting entrepreneurs and scientists who want to bring their concept to the marketplace; and researching trends and developments in Florida’s bioscience industry to benchmark its progress.

The Institute works in partnership with BioFlorida to promote educational initiatives such as the recent Florida BioGENEius Challenge. The statewide science competition for high school students is a stepping stone to the Biotechnology Institute’s International BioGENEius Challenge, the most prestigious high school science competition in the world for original research in biotechnology. Other current and planned initiatives include support for the workforce training programs at the BANNER Center for Life Sciences, industry-supported continuing education certifications, and middle and high school curriculum assistance.

The Institute collaborated with the University of Florida’s Center of Excellence for Regenerative Health Biotechnology (UF-CERHB) to launch a biotechnology resource website designed to connect industry professionals with students and educators. The site includes comprehensive listings of education and training programs, news related to those programs and bioscience career resources. The site can be found at www.floridabiotechtraining.org or www.biofloridainstitute.org.
