Boston College & NSTAR Launch Aggressive Energy Efficiency Agreement

Initiative to cut BC’s electricity use by over 6 million kilowatt-hours in three years

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Working with NSTAR to dramatically cut electricity use, Boston College is committing to an aggressive three-year effort to improve energy efficiency campus-wide. By taking advantage of NSTAR’s expertise and efficiency programs, BC’s anticipated energy savings from this agreement are over 2 million kilowatt-hours each year between now and 2013 – a total of nearly 6.5 million kWh over three years.

“The agreement between Boston College and NSTAR reflects an investment in our future, to reduce energy consumption and related costs”

“We’re proud to be helping Boston College with their commitment to dramatically reduce electricity use through improved efficiency,” said Joe Nolan, NSTAR Senior Vice President of Corporate and Customer Relations. “By taking advantage of NSTAR’s generous incentive offers, BC can expect to realize a financial payback of less than three years on these projects.”

“The agreement between Boston College and NSTAR reflects an investment in our future, to reduce energy consumption and related costs,” said Patrick Keating, Boston College Executive Vice President. “The variety of projects that will be implemented will produce significant returns to the university and is one of the ways BC is working to be more sustainable in our use of resources.”

NSTAR is working with BC to target energy efficiency opportunities including improving existing operational control systems, laboratory process improvements, lighting upgrades and occupancy sensors, and numerous mechanical system upgrades. Along with the substantial energy reduction and environmental benefits that come with these upgrades, NSTAR estimates BC will save about $1 million a year on utility costs after the three-year initiative is complete.
