The Vocab Film Festival: Finally Students Have Fun Learning SAT Vocabulary—Vocab Videos Contest Offers $20,000+ in Scholarships & Prizes

The goal of the contest is to engage students in learning vocabulary and building literacy.

Since February, the Festival has challenged students and filmmakers nationwide to create their own vocabulary videos and photos—short videos or images that illustrate the meaning of words frequently tested in high school classrooms and on the SAT; some teachers have even used the Festival as an engaging class project. Festival monthly and grand prize winners, in both student and filmmaker categories, are chosen by online voters and a panel of judges. As participants and fans across the country vote for their favorite entries, they are also prompted to vote for the nonprofit they would like to see receive special prizes and donations at the close of the Festival.

Participants are competing for more than $20,000 in scholarships, cash, and prizes with specialized filmmaker awards including Avid video software and a $1,000 production contract with A-List’s VocabVideos.com, the groundbreaking online vocabulary platform developed by educators frustrated with the lack of high-quality, affordable vocabulary resources available. The site features hilarious short videos—professionally-produced parodies of popular TV shows like Lost, The Office, and 24—illustrating the meanings of critical words, which are reinforced by an extensive suite of digital study tools including a multimedia flashcard maker, quizzes, worksheets and crossword puzzles. Additionally, the system’s educator assessment and tracking tools allow teachers to monitor individual student and class progress.
