SAN MATEO, Calif. & ORLANDO, Fla.--()--CTIA Wireless -- DeviceAnywhere, the industry leader in end-to-end mobile application testing, announced today at CTIA Wireless 2011, the latest edition of the DeviceAnywhere Metrics report. Based on over 350,000 hours of testing by over 15,000 mobile application developers and QA testers, the report provides a powerful resource for enterprises making educated mobility choices around the most popular devices and Operating Systems.
“Working directly with over 15,000 mobile application developers and QA testers from across the ecosystem we have a unique insight into the broader trends in mobile application testing”
Key findings from the DeviceAnywhere Metrics report include:
RIM maintains pole position as most tested on manufacturer and operating system despite decline
Despite an overall decline of 13.6% over the past 12 months, RIM continues to have the highest total share of smartphone testing time (45.0%) which is almost twice as much as Android, who holds the number two spot.
RIM devices were among the most tested on all monitored networks, including AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile. As a result, RIM has 11 models in the top 20 most popular devices by manufacturer compared to 4 handsets for Apple, 3 for HTC and 2 for Motorola.
Android fastest growing platform for mobile application testing
Despite a slight decline in testing time share in the last quarter of 2010, Android saw a 1.7% rise in usage in January 2011, achieving the largest percentage increase (19.4%) in testing over the past twelve months.
Overall, testing on HTC devices has steadily grown in popularity throughout the year, moving up from 6th to 4th position, while Motorola has maintained its leading place as the second most tested device manufacturer in the past twelve months.
Android OS devices are the most tested smartphone OS devices on the Verizon and T-Mobile networks, second most tested on Sprint, and third most tested on AT&T. This was in part due to the popularity of the HTC EVO 4G, Motorola Droid and HTC Nexus One handsets, which were among the 20 most tested devices in January 2011.
Windows Mobile and Symbian Experience Steep Decline
Windows Mobile saw the most dramatic decline in testing time share with its usage plummeting from 16.2% in December 2010 to 6.1% in January 2011. Symbian testing has also fallen over the past twelve months, from 4.9% in January 2010 to 3.1% in the beginning of 2011.
DeviceAnywhere introduced the first Windows 7 based devices to their service in November 2010 and in January 2011 the OS accounted for a total of 1.3% of total smartphone testing time, up from 1.2% in December 2010.
DeviceAnywhere users focusing testing time on smartphones
Smartphone usage saw a 16.4% share increase over the past year reaching 65.7% in January 2011. Moreover, all of the 20 most used handsets in that same month were smartphones, with Apple iPhone 3G being the most tested device followed by the BlackBerry 8330 (Curve) and Apple iPhone.
“Working directly with over 15,000 mobile application developers and QA testers from across the ecosystem we have a unique insight into the broader trends in mobile application testing,” said Faraz Syed, CEO of DeviceAnywhere. “The DeviceAnywhere Metrics report provides both our customers and the industry as a whole with unique intelligence to cut through some of the hype and speculation that surrounds mobile application development.”
Syed continued:
“Over the past year, both RIM and Android testing has continued to grow especially as organizations look to implement more mature mobility practices. The adoption of tablet devices and other connected devices based on popular mobile OS platforms is likely to play a central role in this continued growth, and subsequent decline in some cases, as organizations look to achieve a consistent end-user experience whilst ensuring productivity and ROI. With increasing pressure amongst handset and operating system companies to attract developers, 2011 looks to be another year of transformation for the mobile ecosystem.”
