Southwall Technologies Achieves Carbon Emissions Reduction Milestone for Automotive XIR® Film Products

Over 28 million square meters of advanced, heat-blocking film estimated to save 1.6 million tons of CO2 emissions globally in over 20 million vehicles

PALO ALTO, Calif.--()--Southwall Technologies Inc. (OTCBB:SWTX), the worldwide innovator of energy-saving films and glass products that save energy and reduce carbon emissions in vehicles, buildings and homes, today announced the sale of its 28 millionth square meter of infrared (IR) reflective XIR® film. XIR film reflects the sun’s heat and has been used in Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) glass and after-market replacement glass of over 20 million vehicles globally to improve passenger comfort, increase fuel-efficiency and reduce emissions. Laminated between two standard sheets of automotive glass, XIR film is the highest performing solar control interlayer available today and is used in vehicles produced by the world’s largest and most exclusive automobile manufacturers.

Based on calculations proposed by industry and accepted for use by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to determine the contribution of IR reflective glazing to a vehicle’s total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, Southwall estimates that XIR film directly contributes to the reduction of approximately 1.6 million tons of CO2 from total global greenhouse gas emissions. These reductions are achieved by reducing the solar heating of passenger cabins, thereby reducing the use of vehicle air conditioning and improving fuel efficiency.

“With the ability to keep as much as 54% of solar heat from entering the passenger cabin, we are seeing increasing interest in our XIR film products as automotive manufacturers seek new ways to meet their fleet GHG emission targets,” said Dennis Capovilla, president and chief executive officer of Southwall Technologies. “XIR film is a proven, off-the-shelf solution that we believe can help the automotive industry meet its immediate and future fuel-efficiency and emission reduction goals.”
