WILLOW GROVE, Pa.--()--Barry K. Logan, PhD, DABFT, National Director of Forensic Services at NMS Labs, is the 2011 recipient of the National Safety Council prestigious Robert F. Borkenstein Award. The award, named for Professor Robert F. Borkenstein – the inventor of the Breathalyzer® – recognizes individuals who, through a lifetime of service, have made outstanding contributions to the field of alcohol/drugs in relation to traffic and transportation safety.

Dr. Logan is a leader in research on impaired driving with a special focus on new designer drugs and prescription medications and how they impact driver performance and crash risk. Throughout his career, Dr. Logan’s research efforts have centered on human performance toxicology, DUI/alcohol and DUI/drugs, drug-facilitated sexual assaults, and postmortem toxicology. He has written more than 80 peer-reviewed articles in many leading journals – often the only or leading work on a given topic.
Under the direction of Dr. Logan, NMS Labs provides forensic toxicology, consulting and interpretation, as well as expert testimony in DUI alcohol/drugs cases. He is responsible for leading the company in the identification and development of innovative tests for the forensic drug testing market. In addition, Dr. Logan has served on multiple committees and boards including serving as the Executive Director of the Borkenstein Course at Indiana University. Dr. Logan is a diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Toxicology, the primary credentialing organization in forensic toxicology for practitioners and laboratories, and has served on its Board of Directors since 2000. He also serves as treasurer of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. Most recently, Dr. Logan founded the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education at the Fredric Rieders Family Renaissance Foundation to promote teaching, mentorship and academic research in the forensic sciences.
