LOS ANGELES--()--The Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes is an educational school fundraising program that raises money to find a cure for type 1 diabetes. While raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), students learn about diabetes and the importance of making healthy choices. The money raised through this program helps fund type 1 diabetes research and provides 10% return to the schools for their fundraising efforts which can be used towards physical education, equipment, boors or other school related needs. JDRF is the world’s largest charitable funder and advocate of type 1 diabetes research and is responsible for more than $1.4 billion in direct funding since it was founded in 1970.
Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease in which the body’s immune system destroys the insulin producing cells of the pancreas making those with type 1 diabetes dependant on insulin. Each year, 35,000 people are diagnosed with diabetes, half of which are children. That’s 40 children every day. For the month of January, 1-800-Get-ThinSM is a proud supporter of the American Martyrs School of Manhattan Beach and their school’s Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes held on Thursday, January 27th. Together we hope to make an impact on the education and cure of type 1 diabetes.
