Publix Recognized as One of FORTUNE’s 100 Best Companies to Work For

LAKELAND, Fla.--()--For the 14th consecutive year, Publix has been honored as one of FORTUNE magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.” Publix was ranked No. 67 on this year’s list and was one of only 13 companies to have made the list every year since its inception in 1998.

Publix also ranked No. 20 on FORTUNE’s Best Large-Sized Company list, one of only four companies on the list with more than 100,000 employees. Publix also made the FORTUNE list of 15 companies to never have had a layoff.

“Making this list for 14 straight years is quite an accomplishment for our company and our associates. It sends a message that, even in challenging economic times, Publix people enjoy their work, and our culture is strong,” said Publix CEO Ed Crenshaw.

Two-thirds of a company’s score is based on a survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about the management's credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie. The remaining third is based on a company’s responses to the Culture Audit questionnaire, which asks detailed questions about pay and benefits programs, and open-ended questions about hiring, communication and diversity. The story will appear in the Feb. 7, 2011, issue of FORTUNE. More information about the survey and how companies were ranked can be found at FORTUNE’s website, www.fortune.com.

Publix is privately owned and operated by its 146,500 employees, with 2009 sales of $24.3 billion. Currently Publix has 1,033 stores in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. Publix’s dedication to superior quality and customer service is recognized as tops in the grocery business, most recently by an American Customer Satisfaction Index survey.
