ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Members of the North Metro REALTORS® Association (NMRA) and St. Paul Area Association of REALTORS® (SPAAR) approved plans to merge the two associations in member meetings held yesterday. The merger will take effect April 1, 2011. The combined organization will serve more than 6,200 members at its St. Paul headquarters and its Coon Rapids and Eagan locations.
“We began this process because we felt we had common cultures, a shared commitment to providing the best products and services available to our members, and sound financial management practices,” said NMRA President Rick Bandimere. “A drafting team comprising members from both organizations spent countless hours developing a merger plan that specifically addressed a number of key issues including board membership, facilities and charitable foundations,” he said.
The drafting team determined that the new organization would retain SPAAR’s legal identity and worked together to revise the articles of incorporation and bylaws that govern the association. A new board of directors made up of both NMRA and SPAAR members will be installed shortly after the merger takes effect.
“The combined organization will serve members and communities in 11 metro area counties, including four of the 10 most populated cities in Minnesota,” said SPAAR President Tony Maurer. “This gives us a more influential voice in regional, state and local government issues impacting homeowners,” he said.
A team of REALTOR® members appointed by the drafting team will begin work to research and recommend a new name for the merged association shortly.
“The name of our organization is of great importance to a number of our members. We don’t want to discount the history of these organizations – especially when you consider SPAAR is the oldest association in Minnesota having been in existence for 125 years,” said Maurer. “Member input will play a significant role in developing new, shared identity.”
Work to streamline redundant processes and enhance member services also begins immediately.
“Our industry has experienced unprecedented tumult in recent years. This merger gives us the opportunity to serve our REALTOR® members in new and better ways,” said Bandimere.
