Second-Annual Walk N’ Wag Fun Festival and Pet Parade to Help Human and Animal Victims of Domestic Violence

ATLANTA--()--Ahimsa House, a Georgia non-profit organization dedicated to helping people and pets reach safety from domestic violence together, today announced that its second-annual Walk N’ Wag Fun Festival and Pet Parade will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 23, 2010 at Chastain Park. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.

Attendees can participate in a one-mile Pet Parade presented by UPS and hosted by Holly Firfer, a silent auction, pet talent contests with celebrity judges and more. Paws, Whiskers, and Wags; Nature Scapes, CityDog Market and Red Bandanna are sponsoring the event.

Pre-event registration online is $25 per adult and $10 for children ages 12 and under or $30 for adults and children at the door. The registration fee covers the Pet Parade, 2010 Walk N’ Wag T-shirt and doggie bandana, goodie bag, door prize ticket, and doggie contests.

Walk N’ Wag will also feature:

  • Live Entertainment: Listen to cool tunes from indie rock band Henry Porter.
  • Gifts: Start holiday shopping at vendor booths or the silent auction.
  • Talented Dogs Contests: Pooches and owners compete for the titles of “Best Costume,” “Best Dog and Owner Look-alike” and “Best Trick.” Celebrity judges include Atlanta Magazine columnist Richard Eldredge, TV personality Holly Firfer and E. Vincent Martinez, fashion blogger and founder of UrbanCouture at Grady High.
  • Pet Pampering: Doggie massages, sessions with a doggie communicator, microchipping, and nail clippings will be available at an additional cost.

“Studies show that abuse victims often delay getting help because their abuser has threatened to injure their pet(s), yet few domestic violence shelters allow animals,” said Ahimsa House Executive Director Dr. Maya Gupta. “Ahimsa House seeks to remove this barrier. Every dollar raised at Walk N’ Wag goes to support this cause. We had a great turnout last year and hope that this year’s event is even better.”

Since opening in 2004, Ahimsa House has provided almost 17,000 nights of emergency shelter for pets in domestic violence situations statewide. Pets are transported to safety, placed in one of Ahimsa House’s carefully screened foster homes or partnering boarding facilities, given veterinary treatment and TLC — then reunited with their owners when they are ready to rebuild their lives.

Walk N’ Wag also extends open paws to businesses that want to offer sponsorships or set up a booth. For more information, visit the Walk N’ Wag Sponsor and Vendor section of the Ahimsa House Web site.
