PORTLAND, Ore.--()--Adventist Medical Center (AMC) now has a Lisa Laser surgical tool for obstetric and gynecology (OBGYN)-related operations, which is an attachment for the da Vinci surgical robot. The robot enables complex surgeries to be completed using a minimally invasive approach, which reduces the physical and emotional impact of procedures on patients.
“As the only healthcare provider in the area with the Lisa Laser, AMC is able to provide the very best tool for endometriosis procedures”
The Portland, Ore.-based hospital is the only healthcare provider on the West Coast to use the Lisa Laser for the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System. The robotic arm along with the visualization provided by the Lisa Laser enables OBGYN surgeons to remove a greater degree of endometriosis than traditional procedures. The devise may also be utilized for hysterectomies, infertility, irregular bleeding and pelvic prolapse.
“As the only healthcare provider in the area with the Lisa Laser, AMC is able to provide the very best tool for endometriosis procedures,” said Gay Sammons, administrative director of perioperative services at AMC. “This tool is much safer and more effective than the traditional laparoscope for endometriosis, resulting in less pain for the patient, quicker recovery times and increased post-operative fertility options.”
Surgeons benefit when using the da Vinci Surgical System by gaining greater precision, increased range of motion, improved dexterity, enhanced visualization and improved access.
Patients have the advantage of shorter hospital stays, less pain, less risk of infection, less blood loss, fewer transfusions, less scarring, faster recovery, better pain control and a quicker return to normal daily activities.
“Having this tool at our disposal, working with the da Vinci Robot, is really a win-win for both the patient and the physician,” said Dr. Brian Drake, a physician who practices obstetrics and gynecology at AMC.
How the da Vinci Robot Works
The surgeon, via master hand controls and magnified view screen system, is able to manipulate various surgical instruments mounted on robotic arms, including the Lisa Laser, that can fit through much smaller incisions than traditional open surgery allows. Through the high resolution 3-D stereo viewer, anatomy appears at high magnification, but with a natural depth of field.
