HAUPPAUGE, N.Y.--()--SMSC (NASDAQ: SMSC) today announced its latest advance in Hi-Speed USB 2.0 connectivity, the USB333x/334x ULPI transceiver family. This new generation of industry leading Hi-Speed USB transceivers supports the latest USB-IF Battery Charging 1.1 specification with SMSC’s RapidCharge Anywhere™ functionality that dramatically reduces the time required for battery charging.
“Our new Hi-Speed USB 2.0 transceiver family provides a cost effective solution that manages the latest industry standard battery charging requirements for portable devices in a production proven ULPI transceiver design.”
This new USB333x/334x product family enables smartphones and other portable devices to negotiate up to three times the charging current in comparison to a traditional USB port resulting in faster battery charging. Additionally, the USB333x/334x product family incorporates SMSC flexPWRTM technology which translates up to a 95 percent reduction in standby current consumption as compared with previous generation SMSC transceivers. This family of devices is designed in a small footprint package and reduces the number of external components through the integration of external voltage regulators and other discrete components reducing the system bill-of-material (BOM) costs by up to 60 percent over current solutions. The USB333x is available in a wafer-level chip scale package (WLCSP) and the USB334x is available in a QFN.
“Consumers who rely on the convenience of charging their portable devices via readily accessible USB ports in PCs, hubs and monitors are demanding rapid USB battery charging time on par with wall chargers,” said Eric Kawamoto, Vice President & General Manager of Portable Products at SMSC. “Our new Hi-Speed USB 2.0 transceiver family provides a cost effective solution that manages the latest industry standard battery charging requirements for portable devices in a production proven ULPI transceiver design.”
SMSC’s USB333x/334x family of Hi-Speed USB 2.0 transceivers provides a physical layer (PHY) solution that is well-suited for portable devices, such as smartphones, digital still/video cameras, and personal media players, in which low operating and standby currents are critical. High levels of integration enable BOM part count reduction, optimizing printed circuit board (PCB) area. Outstanding ESD performance eliminates the need for external electrostatic-discharge (ESD) protection devices in typical applications. The internal over-voltage protection (OVP) circuit protects the VBUS pin from voltages up to 30V and by incorporating a reference clock from the processor, the cost of a dedicated crystal oscillator reference is removed. The USB333x/USB334x family incorporates both 3.3V and 1.8V regulators, making it possible to operate the device from a single supply.
Samples of the USB333x/334x family are available now.
