HOLLYWOOD--()--Paramount Home Entertainment’s Blu-ray Disc of last year’s Star Trek remake was the big winner of the Third Annual High-Def Awards, presented by Home Media Magazine.
Star Trek won three awards: Best Theatrical Blu-ray, Best Single Extra for its “Starfleet Vessel Simulator” and the Consumers’ Choice Award for best overall Blu-ray Disc release.
The Third Annual High-Def Awards honor the best Blu-ray releases from 2009. A panel of judges nominated titles submitted by studios in a number of categories, with winners chosen by a month-long consumer vote held in July.
In addition to Star Trek, Paramount also won Best Picture Quality for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Best Nonfiction Blu-ray for PBS’ The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, by noted documentarian Ken Burns.
The Best TV on Blu-ray award was shared by HBO Home Entertainment’s True Blood: The Complete First Season and Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series Limited Edition. Universal also pulled down an award for Best Blu-ray Collection for The Bourne Trilogy.
Other winners include Warner Home Video’s The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition for Best Catalog Blu-ray, Cartoon Network’s Ben 10 Alien Swarm for Best Nontheatrical Blu-ray and Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s Up for Best Animation Blu-ray.
Two categories were not subject to a consumer vote and were selected directly by the judges. Best Audio Quality went to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s electric guitar documentary It Might Get Loud, and a special award for Best Blu-ray Upgrade, defined as an ideal reason to replace an old DVD version of a title, went to 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s Fight Club.
The Wizard of Oz was the judges’ choice for the best Blu-ray of 2009, as revealed in the results for the Sixth Annual DVD Critics Awards in early August.
