Wireless Innovation Forum Members Set Operations Plan, Meeting Dates for FY2011

Plan Includes Creation of at Least One New Special Interest Group Focused on a Commercial Wireless Market, New Workshops, Certification Capability and Publication of “10 Most Wanted Wireless Innovations”

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Wireless Innovation Forum (www.WirelessInnovation.org) today announced the approval of its 2011 Operations plan by its membership. The Plan includes eight top level objectives in support of the Forum’s Strategic Plan:

“Going to Market with TV Band Devices: Long Term Promises, Near Term Actions”

1. Deliver Relevant Work Products

2. Establish a Certification Capability

3. Define New Initiatives

4. Increase End User Participation

5. Publish a “Top 10 Most Wanted Wireless Innovations” List

6. Strengthen the Forum’s Brand

7. Improve Regional Support

8. Grow Participation

Through these eight objectives, the members of the Forum will develop multiple Reports, Recommendations and Specifications over the coming year for use by the broader advanced wireless community, including:

  • “Cognitive Radio Technology Survey for Public Safety” (Public Safety Special Interest Group),
  • “Hybrid SATCOM Reference Architecture for Public Safety Applications” (SATCOM Special Interest group),
  • “Issues in the International Tactical Radio Market Domain” (International Tactical Radio Special Interest Group),
  • “Cognitive Radio Database: Anticipating Future CR Needs with the Development of a Radio Environment Map” (Cognitive Radio Work Group),
  • “Information Process Architecture” (Cognitive Radio Work Group),
  • “Modeling Languages for Mobility” (Modeling Language for Mobility Work Group),
  • “Security Profiles for Public Safety Radios” (Security Work Group),
  • “International Radio Security Services API” (Security Work Group),
  • “Smart Antenna Specification: PIM and PSM for Smart Antenna” (Smart Antenna Work Group),
  • “Test Guidelines and Requirements for Secondary Spectrum Access of Unused TV Spectrum also referred to as TV White Space” (Test and Measurement Work Group),
  • “Business Models for Open Source Air Interfaces” (Commercial Baseband Processing Technologies Work Group),
  • “Software Communications Architecture Interpretation Guide” (SCA Interpretation Guide Work Group), and
  • “Test and Certification Guide for SDRs based on SCA Part 2” (SCA Test and certification Work Group)

In addition, the members of the Forum plan to initiate at least four new projects starting in 2011 with deliverables that will advance the Forum’s strategies in advocacy, business development, commercialization and education through 2012. Some projects being explored include a revised Market Sizing Study for Software Defined Radio, and a “Plugfest” to test and verify implementations of a Transceiver Facility Specification. To support these activities, the members of the Forum’s International Tactical Radio, Public Safety and SATCOM special interest group will organize workshops focused on exploring requirements for next generation wireless communications systems in their target market domain.

“As chair of the Forum, I am excited by the energy and expertise brought by our members in addressing many of the difficult challenges confronting the advanced wireless community,” says Bruce Oberlies, Chair of the Wireless Innovation Forum and Sr. Director of Advanced Technology and Strategy in Motorola's Government and Public Safety business. “The results of their efforts through the execution of this plan will have a broad impact on the wireless industry, enabling rapid deployment of standardized families of products, technologies and services while reducing the total life cost of ownership of advanced wireless solutions.”

Through its many Working and Special Interest Groups, as well as Working Meetings, Technical Conference, and European Conference, the Forum acts as the premier venue for its members to collaborate to achieve these objectives, providing opportunities to network with customers, partners and competitors, educate decision makers, develop and expand markets and advance relevant technologies. The Forum is organized around five primary committees and a roadmap committee. It currently has 116 member organizations worldwide from every aspect of the reconfigurable radio value chain. Current projects can be found here.
