Cantor Colburn LLP Opens Houston Office

Opening Marks the Fifth Office Nationwide for Leading Intellectual Property Specialty Law Firm

HARTFORD, Conn. and HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The law firm of Cantor Colburn LLP has announced the grand opening of its new office, located in Houston. The new office is located at 2603 Augusta Drive.

Edmund P. Anderson, a partner from Cantor Colburn’s Detroit office, will manage the new office. David E. Rodrigues, a patent attorney from the firm’s Hartford office and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering, will relocate to the Houston office, as well. Veteran Houston intellectual property attorney Paul S. Madan and his team from Madan & Sriram, P.C. will merge their practice into Cantor Colburn.

Leaders from both firms will continue to practice a common legal philosophy of client-focused service and pragmatic legal and business counsel.

Meet the Attorneys:

Edmund P. Anderson is the managing partner of the Houston office of Cantor Colburn. He focuses his practice on patent preparation and prosecution, strategic portfolio development, infringement/validity analysis and opinions, and competitive portfolio analysis; trademarks; trade secrets; copyrights; software; and IP transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, drafting and negotiation of license and complex technology-related agreements and client counseling. Mr. Anderson has extensive in-house experience, having previously managed the development and use of IP portfolios for business units at Honeywell, GE and Delphi, as well as extensive private practice experience as a former partner in the IP practice group at Dickinson Wright PLLC. Mr. Anderson has represented businesses from a broad range of industries, including oilfield services, electrical energy, automotive, aerospace and defense, industrial, consumer electronics and global research and development. He has experience in a wide variety of art areas, including the material, electrical, electro-mechanical, mechanical and chemical arts, and has broad technology experience, including semiconductors, electronics packaging, consumer electronics, industrial automation systems, industrial electrical systems, defense systems, energy, including power generation and nuclear systems, oilfield services, medical systems and automotive technology. In these art areas and technologies, he has developed a particular practice emphasis on a wide variety of metallurgy/materials and processes, including those for superalloys, superconductors, platinum group metals, metal and ceramic composites, coatings, investment casting, thin film materials, thick film materials and various nanomaterials. He also has work experience in the areas of research and development, engineering, procurement and contract management. Mr. Anderson has a B.S. in metallurgical engineering from Michigan Technological University and a J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law. He is admitted to the state bars of Michigan and Minnesota and to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Paul S. Madan is a partner in the Houston office of Cantor Colburn. His practice focuses on patent preparation, prosecution, infringement and validity opinions, and competitor portfolio analysis; trademarks and trade secrets; mergers and acquisitions; licensing and complex technology-related agreements; and pre-litigation analysis, including liability, damages and risk analysis, and litigation support. Mr. Madan has represented businesses from a broad range of industries, including oilfield services – downhole tools using nuclear, acoustic, resistivity, optics and nuclear-resonance and optics technologies; drilling technology; drill bits; and seismic surveying products; high-technology, including products and software relating to laser technology; interactive television; voice-over IP; and DSL. In addition, Mr. Madan routinely participates in new product development reviews, assists clients in identifying patentable subject matter from conception through the design and product development phases, and participates in the development of design-around strategies. Mr. Madan has led many seminars relating to patent portfolio creation and management and has presented ways to manage and contain patent costs at the University of Houston’s Annual CLE Seminar. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Madan was managing partner of Madan & Sriram, P.C., (formerly Madan Mossman & Sriram), which he established in 1996. Prior to that, Mr. Madan was associated with Arnold, White & Durkee; attorney-in-charge of intellectual property law matters for Western Geophysical Company, and the department head of production logging engineering at Schlumberger. Mr. Madan has a B.S. in electrical engineering from Punjab University in India, an MS in Electrical Engineering from Texas Tech University, an MBA from the University of Houston and a JD from the South Texas College of Law. He is admitted to the state bar of Texas and to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

David E. Rodrigues, Ph.D., is an associate with Cantor Colburn in Houston. He has written and prosecuted more than 500 patent applications in a variety of areas such as polymeric composites, polymer synthesis, polymer and composite processing, graphite articles, carbon nanotubes, nanocomposites, metal and ceramic alloys, electromagnetic devices such as X-ray scintillation detectors, infrared imaging devices, microwave generators, photovoltaic cells, solar cells, optical media, and the like. He has participated in patent portfolio planning sessions for GE. He has also drafted invalidity and infringement opinions and done clearance searches for clients that are interested in commercializing new products. Prior to working with Cantor Colburn, he was a manufacturing team leader for GE Silicones and a team leader in the Polymer Processing Development Facility at Schenectady for the GE Global Research Center. He has also worked as a plant chemist for Armstrong World Industries; while there, he was awarded the General Managers Award for developing a new type of thermal insulation. Mr. Rodrigues has a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Karnatak University in India, an M.S. and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and a J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law. He is admitted to the state bar of Connecticut and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
