Librato Introduces “Silverline” Portal to Maximize Utilization of Servers in Clouds and Datacenters

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Librato^®, Inc., a leading provider of software solutions that increase the utilization of cloud and data center resources, today announced Silverline™, a new service that allows users of public and private infrastructure clouds and datacenters to make productive use of spare resources in the servers they are already paying for.

“We developed Silverline to help companies address one of the most significant sources of waste in IT environments: idle resources,” said Fred van den Bosch, CEO of Librato, Inc. “Since the use of server resources by applications varies over time and server instances are typically provisioned for peak load, average utilization tends to be far less than 100%. Silverline makes it possible to run additional workload on an existing server without impacting the primary application in any way. By letting the background workload only consume resources not used by the primary application, Silverline allows resources that are already paid for to be used productively and reduce the number of servers required.”

Silverline uses a lightweight, workload virtualization solution that can be used inside virtual and physical servers. Using the service, background applications can be “Silverlined”, which causes them to be encapsulated in a virtual background container that will only be given resources not required for the primary applications running in the server. This provides companies with a way to utilize the spare capacity in their servers, whether in a public or private infrastructure cloud or a “conventional” datacenter.

According to Fred van den Bosch, “Silverline provides similar benefits as Amazon EC2 Spot Instances, but with lower cost and without interruption of service. It allows companies to fully utilize their server resources by running workloads that are flexible as to when they are run along-side primary applications. These can be workloads such as reporting, data analysis, media conversion, web crawling, search indexing, and other compute-intensive workloads and maintenance tasks.”

Silverline uses Librato’s Load Manager as its underlying technology. Load Manager has been used in enterprise data centers for managing mission critical workloads since 2008. Cleanly layered between the application and the operating system, it is the only resource scheduling solution that can be deployed in physical as well as virtual server environments and for all popular Linux and Windows distributions.
