LAS VEGAS--()--Baseline Consulting, an acknowledged leader in information design and deployment to improve business performance and realize strategic objectives, today at the TDWI World Conference introduced The Data Governance eBook: Maps, Mechanics & Morals When Launching Your Data Governance Initiative. The e-book is now available for free download exclusively through Information-Management.com.
Authored by senior Baseline consultants Kimberly Nevala and Stephen Putman, The Data Governance eBook is not a whitepaper, nor does it read like one. This entertaining parable follows the trials and tribulations of four fictional business people struggling to introduce data governance – the business-driven policy making and oversight of corporate data – into their company.
The four characters work at SpectraDynamo, a fictional manufacturer of high-performance parts for automobile racing engines. As the story goes, SpectraDynamo recently avoided an inquiry from the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission regarding their external financial statements, thanks to the Herculean efforts of its CFO. The CIO is now under pressure to prevent another occurrence and to deliver more timely data from the company’s business applications to the management team. He subsequently commissions a data governance study to address these issues. And thus the adventure begins!
As Baseline’s partner and co-founder, Jill Dyché, states in the e-book’s introduction, this is “not just a story of a bunch of fictional business people struggling to launch data governance and data management. Our e-book presents a prescription for getting it right. We include the nuts and bolts necessary to transcend the requisite decision-by-committee and role confusion so endemic to companies’ information management efforts. By presenting a sustainable stakeholder interaction system, along with arguing on behalf of repeatable processes and formalized data management job roles, our aim is to help you start data governance the right way.”
Dyché will deliver the keynote address, “Building (or Re-Building) Your BI Strategy,” at the TDWI BI Executive Summit in Las Vegas at 8 a.m. on Tues., Feb. 23. She is also the featured speaker at IBM’s invitation-only customer dinner at Les Artistes Steakhouse on Mon., Feb. 22.
In addition, Baseline will be teaching the following classes during the conference. For more information, dates and times, visit TDWI World Conference At-A-Glance.
BI from Both Sides: Aligning Business & IT: This popular workshop by Dyché – often attended by IT and business-user teams from the same company – focuses on ways to ensure that data warehouse and BI projects remain top-of-mind in your organization.
Implementing MDM for BI & Data Integration: Baseline partner and co-founder Evan Levy describes how the existing methods and practices in place with the data warehouse can be expanded to support (and strengthen) master data management (MDM).
Change Management for MDM: Levy discusses the three aspects of change management for MDM – technical, business, and cultural—and describes how best practice companies are ensuring that their master data is deployed in a sustained and deliberate way.
A Data Governance Workshop for BI Professionals: Having managed and worked on dozens of data governance projects both within and outside of BI, Dyché and Kimberly Nevala will guide attendees through a deliberate approach to data governance using a proprietary framework tailored to BI and data warehouse teams.
