IrDA Releases OBEX 1.5 Specification for the Next Generation of Wireless Communication

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--()--IrDA® (Infrared Data Association) introduced today a newest version of OBEX™ (Object Exchange Protocol) specification, version 1.5. OBEX 1.5 enables many wireless technologies to enhance their throughput, increase reliability of the communications and fulfill the need of faster response time. This new version reflects the request from RF technology such as Single Response Mode (SRM) and Reliable Session to be able to function simultaneously without sacrificing performance or reliability. It also has enhanced the Suspend Session behavior to allow immediate suspension of an ongoing operation. Major modifications also have been made to the OBEX Test specification to support these technical enhancements and to ensure all OBEX devices can continue to maintain interoperability.

The OBEX specification was originally developed as a core layer of IrDA specifications; however, it has been widely adopted by many other wireless technologies due to its reliability and technical robustness. It has become a crucial structure for not only optical wireless technology but also for RF wireless technologies such as Bluetooth® and TransferJet®.

The new edition of OBEX protocol was fostered by the OBEX SIG group with the key contributors of iAnywhere Solutions, E-Globaledge and Computer Engineering and Consulting (CEC).
