Thinkwell Author Edward Burger Receives the Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Baylor University has named Dr. Edward Burger the 2010 recipient of the Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching. The award includes a $200,000 award, plus $25,000 for his home department at Williams College in Massachusetts, where Dr. Burger is the Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Gaudino Scholar. Dr. Burger will teach in residence at Baylor during fall 2010.

Dr. Burger earned his Ph.D. at The University of Texas at Austin, having graduated summa cum laude with distinction in mathematics from Connecticut College. Prof. Burger has won many other awards, including the 2001 Haimo Award for Distinguished Teaching of Mathematics, the 2004 Chauvenet Prize, and the 2006 Lester R. Ford Award, all from the Mathematical Association of America.

Dr. Burger began working with Thinkwell more than ten years ago when he authored Thinkwell’s first math course, Calculus. His work with Thinkwell was groundbreaking, based on the idea that modern multimedia could be an effective means to teach college students math. The collaboration led to five more math courses with Thinkwell, from Prealgebra to Calculus II. The courses replace traditional textbooks for thousands of students in colleges and universities across the nation.
