OWINGS MILLS, Md.--()--A leading provider in the health care industry, Active Day, Inc., has hired Peter H. Harris as its new CEO and President. Harris, a savvy 40-something executive from Texas, was brought on by Sterling Partners, a principal owner of Active Day, to steer the ship through a challenging environment. In addition to leading the company, Harris will spearhead efforts to meet with legislators on behalf of Active Day and other adult day care providers, who could see dramatic changes in state funding for Medicaid clients as part of the fallout from health care reform.
“Our primary source of payment is Medicaid and other government programs”
Harris has served as an executive or board member for multiple healthcare companies, including national home health and hospice providers. He also has served as CEO of a national staffing firm with more than 200 offices and thousands of employees across the country. Prior to joining Active Day, Harris served as CEO of an organization charged with overseeing operating initiatives at more than 35 portfolio companies of a $6 billion private equity and investment firm.
“Since my days as an executive at a national hospice company several years ago, I have not seen the level of caring for people that is apparent at our centers,” said Harris after a recent tour of more than a dozen Active Day centers. “The center directors are running businesses, but their primary purpose is to enhance the quality of life for clients and their caregivers.”
Medical adult day care companies like Active Day serve the elderly and other adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is often seen as a more cost effective alternative for long term care than a nursing home, and it allows families to keep their loved ones out of full-time institutional care unless or until it is absolutely necessary. “Our primary source of payment is Medicaid and other government programs,” said Harris. “We need to make sure that legislators and the public understand why adult day health services are the best alternative for many individuals and their caregivers.”
Harris received an honors undergraduate degree in applied mathematics and political science from Northwestern University and a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy.
