LONDON--()--Brent Cross Shopping Centre opened its doors at 7.30am today - two and a half hours before stores began trading - as huge crowds of shoppers arrived early to get their hands on Boxing Day bargains.
“Sunday the 27th is going to be another bumper day at Brent Cross, as our three largest retailers - John Lewis, Fenwick, and Marks & Spencer - start their sales with fantastic offers across fashion and homeware ranges.”
Norman Black, from Brent Cross, says: “Last year on Boxing Day, we had 30,000 people in the Centre by midday, and this year it looks as if we have easily exceeded that figure. The huge popularity of the sales this year is being helped by the fact that retailers largely held their nerve with pre-Christmas discounting, offering far fewer reductions than in 2008.
“In the run up to Christmas we saw average discounts of 25% off across 25% of stock. Now the stores are offering up to 70% off across the majority of their stock. One of the best savings we have seen is £2,500 off a Chopard watch at Goldsmiths, now retailing for £4,220.”
More than one hundred stores at the Centre have gone on sale today, with the brand new Banana Republic shop, River Island and Hollister attracting large volumes of shoppers. Before it opened at 10am this morning, River Island had almost 500 shoppers queueing to be one of the first into the store. Similarly, Hollister is seeing people lining up to take advantage of clearance items, with a one-in-one-out system operating.
Norman continues: “As always, the sales are going to be short and sharp, with stores competing to clear their stock quickly to make way for new season products in January. Retailers have planned their stock levels carefully this year and don’t have much depth remaining, so, if you are looking for a bargain you will need to get in early as the quality items won’t be around for long.
