Iberdrola Renewables Extends and Expands Existing PPA with Modesto Irrigation District

PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Iberdrola Renewables has extended and expanded an existing power purchase agreement (PPA) with Modesto Irrigation District (MID), the Modesto, California, area’s public power utility.

“With this expanded PPA, MID now gets 19 percent of its portfolio from renewables.”

MID will extend an existing 25 megawatt (MW) contract with Portland, Oregon-based Iberdrola Renewables to June 30, 2015. Then from July 1, 2015, to June 30, 2028, MID will expand the PPA to 50 MW. MID has a goal of getting 20 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2017.

“This continued and expanded PPA puts MID in an even better position to respond to California’s changing renewable energy targets,” said Allen Short, MID’s General Manager. “With this expanded PPA, MID now gets 19 percent of its portfolio from renewables.”

The power from the contract comes from the High Wind Energy Center located in Solano County, California. The project came online in 2003 and MID has been taking deliveries from the 162-MW project since June 1, 2004.

MID is a public agency established by a vote of the people in 1887. Governed by a locally elected Board of Directors, MID operates on a not-for-profit basis with water and electric rates based on the cost of providing service. Its primary water source is the Tuolumne River.
