Cancun’s Restored Beaches Celebrated with Savings

The welcoming white-sand beaches are returning as a result of a USD $71 million project by Mexico to restore one of the main lures of the popular tourist destination.

Mexico started replenishing beaches at Cancun and vicinity in September, pouring more than 227,020 gallons of an expected 1.3 billion gallons of sand onto the shore by Dec. 1. Beaches were restored after Hurricane Wilma in 2005, but later washed away, leaving little to no sand on once wide, luxurious beaches. Project completion is expected by February.

The Mexican Caribbean coast, renowned for its beaches, nightlife and proximity to Mayan ruins, is among the attractions that brought 20.3 million U.S. travelers to Mexico last year – where they spent more than $11 billion, according to the U.S. Office of Travel and Tourism Industries.
