NEW YORK--()--This winter season, Gary Dymski, shares ideas for how to protect your home and families from indoor allergens, rodents and high energy costs.
Gary’s recommendations include:
According to the EPA, the air inside our home is four to five times more polluted than the air outside. To combat indoor allergens this winter, consider a whole house air cleaner such as Trane CleanEffects. It removes up to 99.98 percent of particles from the filtered air – including particles and allergens such as bacteria, dust, mold spores, pollen and pet dander. It also removes more than 99 percent of the flu virus from a home’s filtered air.
Another place we find allergens is on our bedding and clothing – especially as we start to unpack these items from winter storage. To help reduce allergens found in these items, try using the SteamWasher from LG Electronics. It features a unique Allergiene cycle that reaches a temperature of 131 degrees, which is recommended by the National Institute of Health to reduce allergens such as dust mites and pet dander. This cycle reduces allergens by more than 95% and is still gentle on your fabrics. And what’s great is that you only need to use this cycle once a week, or as needed.
For everyday loads, think about washing your clothes in cold water, because 80% of the energy spent in the laundry room is used to heat the water. Look for a detergent like Tide Coldwater which is specially formulated for a cold-water wash. You’ll save on energy costs without sacrificing ANY performance.
When it comes to sealing our homes this winter, it’s important to caulk and to use caulk that provides long lasting energy savings. Choose a 100% silicone caulk like GE Silicone II instead of an acrylic caulk. Silicone is flexible, weatherproof, and waterproof and will last, while acrylics can shrink, crack and crumble over time.
According to a survey by D-CON at RodentRiskReport.com, this winter is projected to be one of the worst years for rats yet. When sealing up your home, make sure to check for possible entry points for unwanted furry pests and also keep on hand reliable products like d-CON® ‘s traps or baits such as their Ready Mixed Bait Bits.
