LOS ANGELES--()--Clicker Media Inc. today announced the public launch of Clicker.com, the first complete programming guide to Internet television. Clicker, which has been in private beta since mid-September, is the first truly comprehensive, structured and unbiased resource for navigating all broadcast, and broadcast-quality, programming online. Clicker gives consumers a single point of entry for discovering what's available to watch, where to watch it, and what's worth watching across the entire Internet.
“The last era of television was simple to navigate in retrospect”
Clicker is also unveiling today a litany of new features previously unavailable during beta, including a 33% percent increase in content coverage, which brings its index to over 400,000 full episodes from over 1,200 sources in more than 1,200 categories. In addition, Clicker has added over 30,000 movies from Netflix Instant Streaming and Amazon VOD. (Clicker also catalogs more than 50,000 music videos from over 20,000 artists.)
Also new to Clicker.com are feature enhancements honed and developed during the 58-day private beta program. Key developments include:
- Improved DVR-like Playlist functionality, including new episode alerts and full “season passes”
- Facebook Connect integration, so anyone can create a Clicker account with Facebook and/or tie their Clicker account to their Facebook profile
- User-Generated Content – fans can contribute their own thoughts, observations, and facts about any show or episode
- Search Within: The ability to restrict a search to topics within a specific program. For example, searching “Warren Buffett” within the show Charlie Rose specifically brings up those episodes where Buffett is interviewed
- Related Search: Machine-learning based suggestions on related programs. For example, 30 Rock, The Office and Larry Sanders Show are offered as related suggestions for the show Seinfeld
“The last era of television was simple to navigate in retrospect,” says Jim Lanzone, founder and CEO of Clicker Media Inc. “Shows came on at specific times, and we had a schedule laid out in a neat grid. But even the growth from three TV networks to 150+ cable channels was nowhere near as dramatic as today’s changes toward a world of nearly infinite video-on-demand, scattered amongst thousands of online destinations. Helping viewers navigate this new landscape, to discover what’s on online and where to find it, is the singular need Clicker was built to fulfill.”
Clicker’s core functionality represents a combination of:
- Directory – a browseable taxonomy of all programs by title, category, popularity, airdate and network, organized in simple tree structure fashion
- Search engine – direct navigation to a specific show or video
- DVR – the Clicker Playlist lets users track which episodes of their favorite shows they’ve watched, set season passes for high-priority content, and receive alerts when new content becomes available
- Wiki – allows fans to contribute information for a given show or episode
- Entertainment Guide – from charts of most popular shows and episodes by category to editorially highlighted programs by the Clicker staff
Clicker recently welcomed Blake Krikorian, founder and former CEO of Sling Media to its board of directors. He joined Clicker founder/CEO Jim Lanzone (former CEO of Ask.com) and Series A investors Bill Gurley of Benchmark Capital and Geoff Yang from Redpoint Ventures, and J.D. Heilprin, founder of ModernFeed, a website acquired by Clicker. Clicker launched their private beta in September 2009, and opens today to all users without the password restriction previously required.
