Samsung Introducing Brightest Outdoor Display – A 2000nit 70-inch LCD panel

CES Unveiled@NY 2008

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Looking to brighten the out-of-home advertising market, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world’s largest provider of thin-film transistor, liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCDs), today announced that it has developed a 70-inch diagonal, “super bright” LCD digital signage panel – the brightest panel in the world to be mass produced.

“Advertisers, outdoor media companies, cities, universities, hotels and malls will be thrilled with this super bright, super-sized display that will command the most regal of appearances when the weather is dismal or even on a very bright summer day”

Samsung’s new 2000nit LCD panel is one-third brighter than the previous brightest digital information display (DID) display (1500nit) and has been designed to optimally accommodate the tremendous range of lighting conditions affecting outdoor displays.

The new Samsung DID will be available for use in digital signs for transit centers, bus shelters, museums, and for the outside of retail centers, to replace less noticeable poster advertisements.

“We developed this DID panel to jump out and call to you anywhere it’s used, making a statement of rich, vivid imagery that passersby can’t help but appreciate,” said Scott Birnbaum, vice president, Samsung LCD Business. “Advertisers, outdoor media companies, cities, universities, hotels and malls will be thrilled with this super bright, super-sized display that will command the most regal of appearances when the weather is dismal or even on a very bright summer day,” he added.

The new Samsung “super bright" DID panel generates four times the brightness of a typical LCD TV today, and comes with a unique brightness control feature that allows outdoor advertisers to lower the brightness level at night to the level of a conventional HDTV.

Using local dimming LED (light-emitting diode) technology, Samsung’s “super bright” DID LCD panel mitigates its added power consumption by continually adjusting picture brightness in very precise “localized” increments, thereby avoiding having to brighten areas that don’t require brightening. Local dimming technology permits the new panel to increase its dynamic contrast ratio up to 200,000:1.

The new 70-inch “super bright” display incorporates advanced commercial DID system functionality to make it more reliable for 24x7 viewing. In addition, it provides a Full-HD (1080p) screen resolution with 16.7 million colors. It also provides the widest viewing angle available: 178 degrees. Weighing only 80 kilograms, the panel is 1630 millimeters (mm) wide by 952mm high by 129.6mm deep, and can be used in either a portrait or landscape format.

Besides being used for advertising, Samsung’s 70-inch DID panel can serve as a public communication device to provide visually-enhanced emergency messaging, directions, maps or visitor information.

The new display was designated an Innovation Award “honoree” for the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show in the Video Display category at a ceremony in New York earlier today. CES is produced by the Consumer Electronics Association, which represents more than 2,200 corporations involved in the design, development, manufacturing, distribution and integration of consumer electronics products.

Samsung will begin sampling its 70-inch, 2000nit display before year end.
