Rapid Time to Market with 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ Processors Achieved by Server Infrastructure Providers

Server Motherboards from Industry Leaders Including Supermicro, Tyan and ASUS Ready Thanks to AMD Common Core Strategy

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that more than 85 server motherboards and barebones servers are validated to support the upcoming 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processor and are available today. Thanks to the generational consistency that only AMD offers with its server processor, leading server infrastructure providers including ASUS, Supermicro, and Tyan are currently shipping high-performance server motherboards. These boards are optimized for OEMs, ODMs, solution providers and business customers to take full advantage of the enhanced power management and virtualization capabilities and unprecedented levels of price/performance-per-watt delivered by the 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor, codenamed “Shanghai.”

“With the same innovative power management capabilities that AMD introduced last year such as Dual Dynamic Power Management™ and Independent Dynamic Core Technology, combined with the AMD 45nm manufacturing process, we are excited to help our customers achieve ultimate energy-efficiency in their data centers.”

“Our server infrastructure partners recognize the significant performance gains of our new 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor across the most critical IT workloads of today such as virtualization, web serving and HPC, and have worked with AMD to quickly validate their server solutions to have motherboards ready right at launch,” said Patrick Patla, general manager and vice president, Server and Workstation business, AMD. “The AMD goal of delivering the industry’s most stable and consistent server platform helps ensure that our channel and OEM partners can deliver their new platforms to market this quarter.”

Server Infrastructure Support

AMD server infrastructure partners leverage the AMD Common Core Strategy, which eases technology transitions and helps preserve IT software images, and Same Socket Technology for an easy upgrade from dual- to quad-core processors and from one generation of quad-core processor to the next, all in the same power and thermal envelopes. The customer-focused and highly scalable AMD platform allows a powerful performance enhancement with rapid validation of new motherboards for the enhanced Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor.

“The AMD platform longevity strategy not only helps our customers protect IT investments and simplify IT management, it helps us quickly deliver higher-performing, innovative server solutions to the market due to easy validation cycles,” said James Sytwu, general manager, TYAN Business Unit, Mitac International Corp. “New 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors will help us enhance the energy efficiency, performance-per-watt, and virtualization efficiency of our customers’ server infrastructures.”

“Supermicro offers a superior selection of energy-efficient, application-optimized A+ servers, workstations, SuperBlade® servers and motherboards based on AMD’s upcoming 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors that empower our customers to grow, adapt and scale as their business demands evolve,” said Phidias Chou, vice president, Worldwide Sales, Supermicro. “With their enhanced quad-core processor, AMD is delivering exceptional performance-per-watt capabilities. Combined with our leading-edge green server technology, these solutions are ideal for today’s challenging IT spending environment.”

“The upcoming 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor represents one of the most dramatic performance uplifts and enhancements in power efficiency we have ever seen,” said Tom Lin, director, ASUS Server Business Unit.

Additional server infrastructure support for the new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor is also expected from industry partners including MSI, GBT, IESC and Quanta.
