Goat Wandering Bronx Streets Finds Refuge at Farm Sanctuary

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Tomorrow, March 8, Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, will welcome a young goat to its farm animal shelter in Watkins Glen, NY. The goat was found wandering in the Bronx and picked up by New York City police today. The Manhattan branch of Animal Care & Control of New York City (AC&C) is now sheltering the animal—who will be transported upstate by the Mayor’s Alliance for New York City’s Animals early tomorrow morning.

“We know Denny [the goat] is going to a wonderful sanctuary that will give him the care that he truly deserves”

“We are excited to welcome this tiny yet very brave goat to our shelter,” said Susie Coston, Farm Sanctuary’s National Shelter Director. “By running for his life, very likely from one of New York City’s many live markets and slaughterhouses, he escaped a fate that no animal deserves and will now receive lifelong refuge and all the healthcare and affection he needs to really thrive. He will also become an ambassador for farm animals everywhere, educating the public about the horrors animals like him endure every day.”

“We know Denny [the goat] is going to a wonderful sanctuary that will give him the care that he truly deserves,” said Charlene Pedrolie, Executive Director of AC&C. “We are so grateful to the Farm Sanctuary and all of our rescue partners for helping us save the lives of the animals that are in most need of help.”

According to the A&C, the 25-pound pygmy goat was discovered by New York City police near 141st Street and St. Ann’s Avenue in the Bronx—just a few blocks from where another Farm Sanctuary resident, Lucky Lady—a seven-month-old lamb who escaped slaughter and made international headlines—was found last June. Both runaways are two of more than 200 farm animals rescued from the New York City area and brought to Farm Sanctuary over the past year, including Maxine, a cow found running through the streets of Queens; Joey, a goat found wandering through Brooklyn; Lucky Lady, a lamb on the lam in the Bronx; and Queenie, a cow who escaped a slaughterhouse in Queens.
