Interactive seminars for anyone “Over Age 50 and Looking for a Job”

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--RetirementJobs.com and Borders Group, Inc. today announced their joint participation in a series of workshops to help people age 50 and older find work.

“Borders is an attractive option for older workers”

Commencing with a pilot program of five workshops that will take place in Borders stores across Massachusetts in August, the Age 50+ Employment Workshops are 90-minute, interactive sessions led by career coaching expert Bob Skladany, vice president for research and Age Friendly Employer Certification™ at RetirementJobs.com, the #1 career Web site for people age 50 and older. Presenters will also include Deborah Russell and Ed Redfern, Jr., from the AARP Workforce Issues Team that develops resources for 50+ job seekers, including the AARP Careers Web site. Russell is Director of the Workforce Issues team and Russell oversees the AARP National Employer Team program that connects jobseekers age 50+ to employers who value their experience and have current job openings.

The workshops will be hosted by Borders, a leading global retailer of books, music and movies, as part of its ongoing community outreach and commitment to attracting and retaining mature workers.

The Age 50+ Employment Workshop session covers the following topics:

  • The Age 50+ Workforce
  • What Job Are You Looking For?
  • What Jobs Are Available?
  • Obstacles – Can’t Land a Job?
  • Who’s Hiring for Which Jobs?
  • Sources for Jobs and Leads
  • Your Job Search Plan
  • Job Search Resources
  • Getting the Job

A comprehensive workshop handbook summarizing all topics covered will be provided to attendees. The handbook will include a suggested reading list, and a list of employment-related resources. Representatives from RetirementJobs.com and community-based organizations will be available afterward to answer individual questions about employment and job searching.

The August 2007 Massachusetts Age 50+ Employment Workshops will take place at the following Borders stores at the local times specified:

Boston Borders, Downtown Crossing
            August 9, 11 a.m.

            August 23, 7 p.m.

“Searching for a new job or new career at age 50, 55, 60, 65 and beyond is a challenge as the U.S. workforce ages, and whether out of necessity or choice, people are staying in the workforce longer,” said Tim Driver, CEO of RetirementJobs.com. Our workshop will allow participants to learn about practical approaches to finding meaningful, challenging and rewarding work in a sometimes unwelcoming labor market. We’ll talk about the types of jobs available, who’s hiring, managing your job search, and how to confront and overcome age bias and other obstacles to employment.”

“Borders is an attractive option for older workers,” said Andrea Smith, senior manager of talent acquisition for Borders. “We offer the flexibility, environment, benefits and programs that many mature employees find appealing. Older workers are a growing part of our workforce and an important part of our customer base as well. That’s why we are delighted to team up with AARP and RetirementJobs.com to host these informative sessions that we hope will educate and inspire many workers over 50.”
